A Golden Game in Glasgow

The Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games delivered a week of memorable performances from Newton athletes, led by a historic gold medal from Sinesipho Dambile.

Making his Commonwealth Games debut, Dambile produced a superb performance to win the men’s 200m title in 19.96 seconds. In doing so, he became the first South African athlete to win Commonwealth Games gold in the event — a landmark achievement and a defining moment in his rapidly developing career.

Gift Leotlela came agonisingly close to adding another medal in the men’s 100m. He delivered a season-best time of 9.91 seconds to finish fourth, missing the podium by just one hundredth of a second. While the margin was painfully small, the performance underlined Gift’s quality and provides plenty of momentum for the remainder of the season.

Across the middle- and long-distance events, Newton athletes consistently earned their places on the Commonwealth stage.

Brian Komen of Kenya and Botswana’s Tshepiso Masalela progressed to the men’s mile final, while Kenya’s Kelvin Loti reached the final of the men’s 800m. Daniel Ebenyo placed sixth in a highly competitive men’s 10,000m final, and Andrew Kiptoo also lined up in the men’s 5000m final.

On the women’s side, South Africa’s Karabo More marked her Commonwealth Games debut by advancing to the women’s mile final — an important achievement at her first Games and another valuable step forward in her international career.

From a historic gold medal to breakthrough finals and season-best performances, Glasgow showcased the quality, depth and growing international presence of Newton athletes.
